Overview: Mayu is about as typical of a hikkikomori as most get. She doesn't talk to many people except for Yuki, and she chooses to lock herself in her room most of the day instead of getting out and socializing. It doesn't help that a lot of people don't have the same amount of intellect as her, making talking to others rather difficult. When you get to know her, though, Mayu really is a sweet girl. She never shows off her intelligence unless she has to, and only steps in to provide her input when asked.

History
Mayu Watanabe. When the name is mentioned among academic circles, the first thing anyone thinks of is "one of the greatest minds in Japan." At an age that most children would be learning multiplication and division for the first time, Mayu was already doing advanced algebra problems. Despite this, Mayu progressed through school at the same rate as her classmates, since she was never one to flaunt her skills. Mayu's humility is what caused her to never really show off how smart she was in anything except test scores, and it has been commented on numerous times among her peers.In her first year of High School, Mayu befriended a girl named Yuki Kashiwagi, who became her sempai and closest friend, even though she has chastised Mayu for using her intellect for non-intellectual things. However, Yuki couldn't stop Mayu from working on making a cure for the common cold, wanting to have done something that was considered impossible -- the greatest challenge for someone like her. Using herself as the first test subject for her cure, instead of preventing it, it only made her more prone to illness, having to take frequent trips to the infirmary until she was considered unfit to return to school. She was then taken in by Yuki, who lived in a more nature-filled setting, in hopes that being away from the city would help Mayu's health improve.
Thus, Mayu has since been regarded as a Hikkikomori... Nowadays, she mostly spends her time on the internet, or in her room watching anime... But secretly, she's been working on a project that not even Yuki is aware of.
